Fine motor skills are defined as the ability to co-ordinate and control the small muscles of your hands and wrists, including the ability to pick up, release and grasp. These small muscles perform the movements needed in writing, and holding a pencil. Children exercise these skills in a multitude of ways. Some of which include buttoning, tying knots, lacing, drawing, cutting, using play dough, building with small blocks and the list goes on! Developing these skills is crucial as they are the building blocks for many other skills children will learn as they grow, including writing! Scrap paper and writing materials should also be a staple in your child's playroom :)

Our lovely fall trees :) A note to illustrate the endless learning opportunities occuring in every minute of every day...
Tearing the tissue paper and scrunching it all up develops our fine motor skills. Discussing all the colours of leaves we are gluing onto our tree (en Français) develops French language skills. Sharing pots of glue and tissue paper with friends develops our social skills. Being acknowledged for creating an artistic masterpiece develops our confidence. Can you think of another skill I missed?! Making paper cars proved to be a very challenging activity! Pushing our motor and coordination skills to the max to cut out the templates that would later fold into a car! ...and the final product!
